They never played it safe. On the contrary—they often featured striking designs, unconventional proportions, and a distinctive character that made them easily recognizable at first glance. Edox is one of those brands that has built a very specific identity over its long history. Paradoxically, this distinctiveness was both their greatest strength and their greatest weakness.
They no longer come across as pure-bred sports divers, but rather as modern, sporty-elegant watches designed for everyday wear.
While loyal fans of the brand appreciated the boldness of standing out from the crowd, the broader public often opted for better-known and more conservative alternatives. However, the new generation of Grand Ocean models suggests that the company in Biel, Switzerland, is well aware of this fact. And it seems they’ve decided to change it.
A dial that changes the character of the watch
The most striking new feature of the entire collection is undoubtedly the new textured dial. The embossed pattern, inspired by the movement of ocean waves, lends the dial depth and an ever-changing character—a design that has been here before and will be here a million times more. However, this is not a superficial effect designed to grab attention at any cost. The texture changes depending on how the light hits it, creating an interesting play of reflections that makes the watch appear more vibrant than it does in product photos.
In my opinion, it is precisely this detail that best captures the new direction of the Grand Ocean collection. They no longer come across as pure-bred sports dive watches, but rather as modern, sporty-elegant watches designed for everyday wear.

The sapphire crystal with its gently domed profile also plays a major role in the overall impression. On paper, it’s a minor detail, but in reality, it significantly changes the way the watch looks on the wrist. The transition between the bezel and the dial is smoother, the case profile is more elegant, and the watch as a whole has a more modern look than previous generations. It is precisely details like these that often set well-designed watches apart from mediocre ones. It’s not a feature that would stand out in a catalog, but rather an element that makes an impression every time you look at your wrist.
Everyday sports watches instead of dedicated dive watches
The steel case, measuring 42 mm in diameter, 11.2 mm in height, and 48 mm in length, offers a nice compromise—neither too big nor too small. After all, it’s meant to be an everyday watch, and the Ronda 515 quartz movement with a date display—elegantly renamed Caliber 53—is perfectly suited for that purpose.
The solid hands are filled with luminescent material, but the applied hour markers are not. To tell the time in the dark, you’ll have to make do with the dots above the polished hour markers.
More Reasonable Prices Make Sense
Perhaps even more interesting than the design itself is the brand’s pricing strategy. Historically, the manufacturer has not been one to keep a low profile. Its models have often aimed higher, and the price tags reflected that. Recent years, however, have shown a different trend. The brand is clearly seeking to enter the segment of more affordable Swiss watches, and the Grand Ocean is further evidence of this shift.
And to be honest, it makes sense. Today’s market is full of people looking to buy their first high-quality Swiss watch. Many of them, however, automatically gravitate toward well-known brands, while EDOX remains somewhat off the radar. Yet the brand has an exceptionally rich history and definitely has a lot to offer. If it continues to combine more reasonable price tags with a more versatile design language, it could find an entirely new audience—not only among experienced collectors but also among newcomers looking for their first “Swiss watch.”
The missing bezel comes as a surprise
Still, I have one reservation about the new Grand Ocean. Although we’re talking about a watch with a water resistance of 300 meters, it lacks a rotating bezel. For a model that, given its specifications, still has one foot in the diver’s watch category, this is a decision that raises eyebrows. Personally, I think the reason is simple. EDOX has prioritized a more attractive everyday design over pure functionality. After all, the absence of a screw-down crown suggests a similar approach. Paradoxically, though, it doesn’t bother me at all.
Yes, the crown guard serves a practical purpose. But let’s be honest: most owners of these watches won’t be battling an octopus at the bottom of the ocean or exploring shipwrecks at depths of several dozen meters. The Grand Ocean is, above all, a watch for everyday life. And it’s precisely in that context that I’ve always found the cleaner lines of the case—without massive protective elements—to be more aesthetically pleasing.
I know that some fans of rugged divers’ watches—and especially die-hard Paneristi—won’t agree with me. But personally, I have to say that in this case, the lack of a crown guard actually enhances the watch’s appearance.
Verdict: The most interesting Grand Ocean in recent years
In my opinion, the new EDOX Grand Ocean Date shows the brand in a slightly different light than we’re used to. It’s still distinctive enough not to blend in with the competition, but at the same time, it’s much more versatile and accessible than many of its older models. The textured dial with a wave motif, the more elegantly designed case, and the more affordable pricing suggest that EDOX wants to appeal to a broader audience than before.
And if it continues in this direction, this brand—which has been somewhat overlooked for a long time—could become a very interesting player in the affordable Swiss watch segment. In my opinion, the Grand Ocean is one of the most interesting moves EDOX has made in recent years, even though its design is, at first glance, surprisingly conservative.
