Presidents and Divers
The Swiss brand Vulcain has a long history in the world of watches. It was founded as early as 1858 and has enjoyed a long and successful journey. It gained widespread recognition primarily thanks to the Cricket model with a mechanical alarm, which even U.S. presidents came to love.
In the 1960s, Vulcain jumped on the bandwagon of popular diver’s watches and introduced the Skindiver model, which was intended to be a sportier, more versatile, and more affordable alternative to professional diver’s watches.
The year 2023 saw its return in a modernized form—the Vulcain Skindiver Nautique model. The brand decided to build on its heritage and revive one of the most successful designs in its history.
What to Expect?
At first glance, it’s clear that Vulcain has strived to preserve the spirit of the original model. The 38-mm stainless steel case has ideal proportions that will be appreciated today not only by those with smaller wrists, but also by anyone who loves old-school sizes. A thickness of 12.2 mm and a lug-to-lug width of 44.5 mm ensure a comfortable fit. Most of my colleagues told me that this is a women’s watch. Yes, but most of my colleagues have hands like a bear’s and prefer larger watches. That doesn’t mean, however, that smaller cases wouldn’t suit them as well.

The domed crystal, together with the distinctive unidirectional bezel, gives the watch a classic, retro scuba diver look. However, the domed sapphire crystal and ceramic insert show that the vintage aesthetic here is limited to the watch’s design. The hands and hour markers feature strong luminescence, ensuring excellent readability. You won’t find any on the second hand, though—after all, this isn’t a purebred diver’s watch that has to meet ISO standards. This is pure fun, taking us back to a time when people went into the water purely for fun and adventure.
The Greatest Classic
At the heart of the watch ticks the tried-and-true ETA 2824, in this case modified to a version without a date display. For purists, this is a welcome detail—the dial remains clean and symmetrical. Also, note that it features an ETA movement, even though the brand isn’t part of the Swatch Group. But that’s just a minor, insignificant detail. After all, everyone knows it doesn’t matter at all whether a watch has an ETA or a Sellita movement 😉.
Durability in an Unassuming Package
The Vulcain Skindiver Nautique isn’t a bulky watch, yet we could rightly classify it as a tool watch. It also holds its own under a shirt, where it will discreetly keep track of overtime at the office. The case offers very solid water resistance of 200 meters, so the Vulcains can handle recreational diving and everyday contact with water without any worries. This is ensured primarily by the screw-down crown and caseback. And since this is a limited-edition Czech model, the inscriptions on it reflect that as well.
For a true throwback, we couldn’t resist the Tropic strap in a fumé dial color. No one will overlook you, and on top of that, you’ll get the most comfortable option the rubber world has to offer. And speaking of comfort, there’s also the “beads of rice” strap. Instantly, you’ll have a more understated piece that will get you through any situation. And if you’d still like to wear a strap of your own choosing and customize your look, you can. The 20 mm width is completely versatile and offers a wide range of options.
H03 – Third time’s the charm!
This watch will appeal primarily to lovers of vintage style and to our fans. It’s versatile enough for everyday wear, yet it has a story and an authenticity that will appeal to collectors and enthusiasts alike. We’ve now added a bit more depth to the story, and it has become a defining element for us at Helveti as well.
If you’re looking for a combination of tradition, practicality, and design that pays homage to the original from the ’60s, the H03 is a bull’s-eye.
The Vulcain Skindiver Nautique is a wonderful example of how to breathe new life into a classic in a way that honors its history without neglecting modern needs. It offers the ideal size, stylish design, ample durability, and a fair price. And it gives us the courage to keep doing what we do for at least another 15 years.
