1,000 meters of water resistance that actually makes sense
How many of us ever go deeper than a few meters below the surface? The new Oris Aquis Pro 1000 makes much more sense than its extreme predecessor.
Oris’s lineup featured clearly defined roles. On one hand, the Aquis Date served as a versatile diver’s watch for everyday wear; on the other, the Aquis Pro 4000 showcased the brand’s technical capabilities. In fact, the brand itself enlists professionals from the field—whether divers or pilots—to help develop its technical watches. And now comes a model that sits right in between them.
With a water resistance rating of 1,000 meters, we’re still talking about a full-fledged professional tool.
At the same time, however, it’s not an extreme design that’s more for show than for practical use. And that’s exactly where I think Oris has struck the perfect balance.
Titanium case and professional features
On paper, it’s still no small thing. With a diameter of 49.5 mm and a lug-to-lug width of around 55 mm, you’ll definitely be aware of this watch on your wrist. The good news is that the titanium case significantly reduces the weight, and the watch doesn’t feel as “heavy” as the numbers might suggest. Plus, the dark PVD finish makes the watch look smaller, which is a pretty crucial detail for a timepiece this large.
A thickness of around 16.5 mm is actually quite reasonable for a “diver’s watch.” It still won’t fit under a shirt cuff, but compared to extreme diver’s watches, it’s significantly more wearable.

Safety First
One of the key features remains the Rotation Safety System (RSS). You must first lift and release the bezel, rotate it, and then lock it back into place. It may sound like a minor detail, but in practice, it’s one of the safest mechanisms for preventing accidental rotation during a dive. And that’s exactly the kind of feature that makes sense in a “professional” watch—it’s not just marketing, but a real benefit.
The Aquis Pro 1000 retains the signature DNA of the model series. The textured blue gradient dial, bold hour markers, and strong luminescence ensure excellent readability. The details are also impressive—such as the highlighting of the first 15 minutes on the bezel or the contrasting colors of the luminescence. These are features you’ll appreciate not only underwater but also in everyday life.
The automatic helium valve is really only necessary at great depths, while we mere mortals will appreciate the screw-down crown. The rubber strap with a folding clasp, meanwhile, screams “summer vacation”—and as a bonus, it smells like vanilla. Personally, I like that despite its tool watch character, the watch doesn’t look downright “brutal.” It still retains a certain elegance typical of Oris.
Sellita Instead of Caliber 400—A Step Back or a Step Forward?
The biggest change took place on the inside. Gone is the in-house Caliber 400 with a five-day power reserve; in its place comes the tried-and-true Sellita, also known as the Oris 733. At first glance, it seems like a downgrade. But only if we look purely at the specs. From a practical standpoint, it makes perfect sense: a lower purchase price, simpler and cheaper servicing, and proven reliability.
Honestly? When it comes to tool watches, I’d go with the Sellita. It’s a movement that almost any watchmaker anywhere in the world can repair. And that’s a pretty important feature for a watch that’s meant to be a tool. The same goes for professionals who will actually be using these watches for their intended purpose.
Why the Aquis Pro 1000 Makes Sense
The Aquis Pro 1000 isn’t a watch you buy just because it has extreme specs. It’s a watch that’s technically advanced and can actually be worn, because it isn’t overly extreme. Yes, it’s still large and striking. But it’s not the kind of watch you’d pull out once a month “to make a statement.” After all, you certainly don’t wear your Vostoks just to make a statement either.
The Aquis Pro 1000 m is exactly the kind of watch that proves less can be more. And that’s precisely why it makes more sense to me than its more extreme predecessor. If you’re looking for a true “tool” watch—one that isn’t just a marketing gimmick but actually makes sense in the real world—this is a very strong contender.
