Citizen Elegance EM0411-71X for Women: Solar-powered watches that aren't flashy. They just feel right.

I have to admit right off the bat that I have a soft spot for watches that don’t try to be anything they’re not. I’ll always prefer a model with a simple, clean design over flashy ones (even though I do have a few of those at home, too). And although the Citizen Elegance EM0411-71X comes across as exactly that straightforward, the journey to discovering it was a longer one. In fact, I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it.

Sometimes you’re looking for a watch that will blow you away; other times, one that just feels right. And then there are those from which you don’t expect any magic—but which end up surprising you in the best possible way.

Now, to be honest. Despite my fairly average wrist circumference of 16 cm, I tend to gravitate toward larger watches—often from men’s collections. It’s that moment when I say to myself, “40 mm? Sure. And 46 mm? There’s room for that, too.” This is nothing out of the ordinary in my collection. Which, of course, my colleagues never fail to use as an excuse for a few lighthearted jabs. It’s almost a miracle that this quirk hasn’t shown up in any of the “watch oddities” episodes yet.

Then it was time to find a new watch that would be perfect for summer, and I decided to give a women’s model a try. And since I knew for sure that I wanted a solar-powered watch, I asked my colleague Jirka—our go-to expert on the Citizen brand, a pioneer in solar-powered watches—for his expert advice.

I admit without hesitation that I had to put in quite a bit of effort to justify my aversion to purely feminine styles. Crystals, pearl accents, embellishments, and decorative straps just aren’t my thing. Finding something elegant but not overly sweet is a challenge in itself.

I chose the Citizen Elegance EM0411-71X, which didn’t really catch my eye at first or even second glance, but ultimately surprised me in the best possible way. They’re solar-powered watches that don’t draw attention to themselves. They’re just comfortable to wear and fit perfectly.

The Long Journey to Win My Heart

The dial was initially a source of internal conflict. I’m not a fan of shades of pink—especially the sweet ones that look like a unicorn’s mane and are twice as bold. Here, however, the pink isn’t meant to be flashy. It’s more of a subtle sheen that you only notice when you’re not looking for it. The silver case, made of stainless steel, looks clean and elegant, without any frills or an excessive effort to please.

And the 34-mm size? I’m still coming to terms with it. But I can’t deny that it’s the ideal size for a wrist that doesn’t want to be overloaded or draw too much attention, but still wants to be noticed. The mineral crystal keeps the dial safe, and the watch as a whole feels like something you’d wear to work, to a meeting, or on the weekend.

Eco-Drive for those who don’t have time to worry about batteries

Eco-Drive is exactly the kind of movement for women who don’t want to wait for someone to take pity on them and replace the battery. Inside the case, the in-house Citizen E031 movement works reliably. The light takes care of everything. It passes through the dial, recharges the battery, and once fully charged, keeps the watch running for up to six months without a single ray of light. And when the energy starts to run low, the watch discreetly signals this with a low-battery indicator. No drama, just a quiet reminder that light is its fuel.

Lightweight Steel, a Strong Argument

The steel bracelet on the Citizen Elegance model is surprisingly light and fits the wrist perfectly. It doesn’t pull or pinch anywhere. The watch weighs just 70 grams, which is a big plus—especially on hot summer days when you want to wear as little as possible. Overall, this is the kind of watch that goes well with a white shirt, a summer dress, or a dark sweater. Simply put, it’s versatile without being boring.

Water resistance up to 50 m adds a practical dimension. They aren’t diving watches (you don’t see many of those in the women’s section anyway, especially not solar-powered ones), but they can handle rain, hand washing, and everyday wear. Although steel bracelets aren’t usually among my favorites, this option turned out to be great for summer.

A model that doesn’t have to prove anything

Sometimes you’re looking for a watch that will blow you away; other times, one that just feels right. And then there are those from which you don’t expect any magic—yet they end up surprising you in the best possible way. The Citizen Elegance EM0411-71X falls squarely into that category of understated watches—and that’s exactly why they make so much sense. They’re lightweight, reliable, look great, and are definitely a good choice for summer. While I’d prefer sapphire crystal over mineral glass, and higher water resistance wouldn’t hurt either, for a price tag of 3,900 CZK, we can’t expect miracles — not even from Citizen.

I admit I was a little skeptical about them at first. In the end, though, I’m glad that Jirka’s enthusiasm for the brand—and his professional tendency to praise Citizen at every opportunity—paid off, and I gave them a chance. Although I’d like them a little better if the case were just a hair bigger.
