But a strap can change the character and comfort of a watch more than many people realize. So why not start with a specialist who has been dedicated to straps for generations?

The Austrian brand Hirsch is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of watch straps. Its product portfolio is vast and includes everything from classic leather models to modern hybrid straps that combine fabric and rubber.
How the test was conducted
Over the past two months, I’ve had the chance to try out three different models—the Mariner, the Arne, and the Toronto—and I’ve worn them during my normal daily routine, including when taking showers.
The goal of the test was to determine how these straps perform during long-term wear, how they react to water, and whether they can provide the comfort we expect from a high-quality strap.
I mounted the Mariner and Arne on Unimatic watches because they were both 22 mm wide. I tested the Toronto model on square Casio watches.
I wore them alternately for about two months, and I wore the watch practically nonstop—including during my daily showers. It was the perfect opportunity to test the durability of the materials and the comfort of the watch during everyday use.

Hirsch Mariner – Waterproof Seatpost
At first glance, the leather Mariner strap looks like a sturdy, sporty strap. It’s made of saddle leather that’s dyed deep into the grain, with a surface that’s been specially waxed. Thanks to this treatment and the cleverly chosen DivingGlove lining, the strap is water-resistant up to 100 m. There were some concerns, however, since it is still made of leather—but these quickly proved to be unfounded. In addition to its high quality, the strap also offers maximum comfort.
I was very pleasantly surprised by how quickly the leather molded to my wrist. It softened beautifully after just the first time I put it on and fit my wrist perfectly. It was extremely comfortable, even when worn all day. Plus, during the colder months, the leather feels very pleasant against the skin, and my hand doesn’t sweat underneath it.
Even though I showered with the watch on every day, the strap dried quickly and showed no signs of deterioration. Over time, a patina is likely to develop, which I think will only benefit the leather. Of course, it comes down to personal taste—some people prefer the new look, while others appreciate the character that the leather develops over time.
The more substantial upper part was a perfect match for the sturdy watches and gave them a more distinctive character.
Hirsch Arne – Textile + Rubber Hybrid
The Arne model is in a league of its own. It combines a fabric upper with premium rubber on the sole. Although it’s relatively thin, it feels very sturdy and well-made.
It felt very comfortable on the wrist from day one. The rubber underside handles sweat and water well, making the Arne a great choice for the warmer months or an active lifestyle. Thanks to its cleverly designed perforations and grooves, it fits both smaller and larger wrists perfectly, and the strap fits like a glove.
Design-wise, it didn’t quite match the Unimatic model I was testing, but I can totally picture it on a simple skin diver watch. There, it would be the perfect summer companion.
Hirsch Toronto – an elegant, subtle leather strap
Toronto is a more delicate leather strap that I chose for my square Casio watch. The combination worked perfectly, and the watch looked both elegant and modern.
I didn’t go looking for contact with water here, partly because of the watch I was wearing.
What impressed me most about Hirsch straps
I was impressed by the build quality of all the models I tested. The clasps are polished, sturdy, and ergonomically shaped so that they don’t stick out and fit comfortably on the wrist. Although they look luxurious and ornate, they’re actually very comfortable to wear.
Another plus is how quickly the straps mold to your wrist. After just a few days of wear, they take on a natural shape, and comfort improves significantly. With the Mariner strap, I felt comfortable right after putting it on, and I attribute that to the strap’s shape, which is reinforced only on the top sections. This also helps keep the watch in place and prevents it from sliding around on your wrist.
Who Would I Recommend Hirsch To?
I would recommend Hirsch straps to a wide range of users without hesitation. Whether you’re looking for classic leather, a sporty hybrid, or a fabric option, you’re likely to find something you like in the brand’s lineup.
A major advantage is the combination of quality, comfort, and durability. Leather models will perfectly complement a subtle outfit. Hybrid and fabric versions, on the other hand, offer solutions for sports or warmer weather.
So if you want to treat your watch to an upgrade without compromising on quality, Hirsch straps are among the safest choices on the market. With prices ranging from 300 to 8,000 Kč, there’s sure to be something for everyone, depending on their needs.
