How can a brand known for making Swiss knives create some of the most comfortable summer watches? Today, we’ll take a look at a model that proves Swiss quality doesn’t have to cost tens of thousands.

From Swiss knives to watches

There are brands that people associate with a single product. Rolex with watches. Leatherman with multitools. And Wenger? When you say “Wenger,” most people think of a Swiss Army knife. And that makes sense. For more than a century, this brand was one of two official suppliers of knives to the Swiss Army. But few people know that it has also been manufacturing watches since 1997. And it is precisely because of this that the brand has carried over the same emphasis on practicality, simplicity, and everyday usability to its watches.

Wenger’s history began in 1893 in the small Swiss town of Courtételle. Originally a manufacturer of cutlery and knives, the company became one of two official suppliers of knives to the Swiss Army as early as the beginning of the 20th century. The other was Victorinox. Starting in 1908, these two Swiss companies produced official army knives, and each gradually established its own identity and customer base.

Although you can no longer find Wenger knives today, the spirit of the brand lives on. After merging with Victorinox, Wenger began focusing on travel gear and watches. And it’s precisely in these products that you can clearly see that the brand has retained the same philosophy as with its legendary knives—to offer a practical, reliable, and well-crafted product that can handle everyday life.

Unlike many other Swiss brands, Wenger has never sought to impress with complicated movements or exclusivity. It doesn’t sell the dream of luxury. It sells watches that you put on your wrist in the morning and take off in the evening, knowing they’ve done exactly what they were supposed to do. That’s true of today’s Executive model as well.

Simplicity That Works

The design is based on the tried-and-true proportions of a classic watch. The round case, bold applied hour markers, clear dial, and sporty bezel create a combination that has worked for decades. That’s precisely why it doesn’t look flashy, even after several seasons. This is a watch that doesn’t try to attract attention with its shape at any cost. Instead, it relies on timelessness.

It offers high-quality craftsmanship, a timeless design, and a fresh summer color that can brighten up any day. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we want from a watch.

The turquoise dial, however, is precisely the detail that sets the Executive model apart from ordinary sports watches. It isn’t flashy, yet it immediately catches the eye. It evokes crystal-clear seawater, a summer sky, or days spent on vacation. It’s a shade that can lift your spirits every time you glance at the time—and realize you don’t even need to check it.

In addition, the color intensity changes depending on the angle of the sunlight, making the watch look more vibrant than it might appear in the product photos.

Daily Parameters

Its practicality is also confirmed by its specifications. The stainless steel case, measuring 34 mm in diameter and 10 mm in height, protects the sapphire-coated mineral glass, which withstands everyday scratches much better than standard mineral glass. Precise timekeeping is ensured by the Swiss Ronda 785 quartz movement, which requires virtually no maintenance. It features a date window at the 6 o’clock position and is water-resistant to 200 m, so the watch can handle rain, the pool, and a beach vacation.

The sporty DNA is further enhanced by a unidirectional rotating bezel in a diver’s style and a distinctive screw-down crown. Thanks to its size, the crown is easy to grip, making adjusting the watch simple and comfortable. The red stripe is another nice detail. We’ve seen a similar color accent on some Seiko solar models in the past. However, Wenger adds side engraving to it, transforming an ordinary crown into an interesting design element.

Steel bracelet and micro-adjustment feature

The three-row steel bracelet combines polished and brushed links, giving it not only a sporty look but also adding a touch of elegance to the watch. It fastens with a folding clasp with a safety lock, and you can also fine-tune the length using the good old micro-adjustment mechanism.

Why do I call it “good old-fashioned” micro-regulation? Because it’s a solution that’s been working in watches for generations. Today, it’s increasingly being replaced by more modern systems that often allow for tool-free length adjustment—or at least spare you the classic search for a toothpick around the house—but the principle remains the same: to offer the ability to fine-tune the bracelet so it fits your wrist as perfectly as possible. Of course, in this price range, we can’t expect the sophisticated systems found in significantly more expensive watches, but the mere presence of micro-adjustment is a nice touch that shows the manufacturer had wearer comfort in mind.

Another big plus is the quick-release pins, which allow you to easily remove the bracelet without tools. This particular model has a slightly unconventional 17-mm lug-to-lug width, so the selection of alternative straps won’t be quite as wide as it is for more common sizes. Nevertheless, the option to swap out the steel bracelet for a leather or fabric strap, for example, remains and gives the watch even more room for personalization.

A 34mm watch can still be surprising even today

Although the Wenger Executive is classified as a women’s model according to current labeling, its proportions show just how much perceptions of watch sizes have changed over the past decade. Today, we often consider 34 or 36 mm to be smaller women’s sizes, but until relatively recently, these were perfectly standard sizes for men’s watches. It was precisely in these proportions that models were created for pilots, explorers, and soldiers who needed a reliable tool that wouldn’t get in the way and could withstand daily use. This is one reason why these Wenger watches can seem surprisingly versatile—they aren’t limited by fashion trends but are based on timeless proportions that have worked for generations.

This is where, in my opinion, Wenger’s DNA really shines through. Just like their legendary army knives, these watches aren’t designed to sit in a display case. They’re meant to be used. You don’t have to worry about whether you can take them on a trip, to work, or for a weekend getaway out of town. You just put them on and go.

Swiss watches without unnecessary luxury

At a time when many brands are competing for as much attention as possible with extravagant designs or complicated features, Wenger offers something much simpler. It offers well-designed Swiss watches that don’t go out of style, but rather mature as you wear them.

The Executive model doesn’t offer any revolutionary features or technological innovations. It offers high-quality craftsmanship, a timeless design, and a fresh summer color that can brighten up any day. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we want from a watch.
